IIIT Rising Scholars Program at The Fairfax Institute

Objective
The objective of the Rising Scholars Program is to offer young scholars an opportunity to develop an understanding, or to improve their understanding, of the Islamic worldview and Islamic intellectual thought, through a certificate program of continuing education courses, with opportunity for independent research and consultation with an advisor.
Qualifications

- Enrollment in undergraduate or graduate certificate or degree program of studies at an academic institution.
- Grade point average of 3.3 or above in courses taken or a place in the top 25% of his/her class.
- Academic or research interest in social sciences, humanities, religion, business, law, communication, or related subjects

The Program |
- Complete one short non-credit continuing education course each term (Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer), beginning with the term of enrolment. Each course consists of 12 contact hours spread over six weeks - with flexible scheduling - and is part of a four-course certificate in Islamic Civilization. Courses are offered at The Fairfax Institute in Herndon, Virginia. Some classes will be offered online.
- Complete one essay project and present it at an in-house seminar at IIIT in the term following the completion of all four courses. Outstanding essays meeting publishing standards may be submitted to American Journal of Islamic and Social Sciences (AJISS), and/or presented at an AMSS conference, with financial subsidy for travel and lodging on need basis.

Deadline

Application deadline is March 18, 2008 for Summer Term admissions. Early applicants will receive preference. |

Scholarship |
- A total sum of $2000 for completion of the Program.
- Scholarship amount to be disbursed in four installments of $250 each at the beginning of each of four courses and one installment of $1,000 at the end of the essay project.

The Certificate |
The certificate in Islamic Civilization consists of four courses as detailed below:
- Fall: Qur’anic and Hadith Sciences - Khalid Troudi
- Winter: Islamic Jurisprudence- Dr. Adam AlSheikh
- Spring: Islamic History and Civilization – Dr.. Abu Bakar Al-Shingieti
- Summer: Historical and Contemporary Reform Movements - Dr. Hisham Altalib
Essay Project: Selected by the Rising Scholar in consultation with Program Advisor
Winter and Summer Term courses may be substituted by courses that may be of special interest to the Rising Scholars cohort, with the approval of the Program Advisor. |

The Fairfax Institute

The Fairfax Institute (TFI) is the instructional division of International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), a 26-year old research and educational institution with research collaboration around the world. TFI is located in Herndon, Virginia. Courses will be offered on-site, but some class sessions may be conducted on-line or off-site. All tuition fees will be waived for Rising Scholars.
