Non-Profit Management Course
More effective management of Islam-based community organizations is the theme of the nonprofit mangement fcourse taught by TFI director Dr. Iqbal Unus in April and May. "Based on feedback from those attending this course, we are offering it on-line in the Fall term," says Dr.Unus.

This course will focus on specific elements of management which help Islam-based non-profit, community service organizations reach their goals by working with and throught their people and other organizational resources. It will deal with the management process, which comprises of mangement functions such as planning, organizaing, influencing and controlling. The textbook for this course is "Executive Directors Guide: The Guide for Succcessful Nonprofit Management" written by a team from the Third Sector, New England, and published by the United Way. Supplementary material will be provided by the Instructor and Guest Instructor. Only selected portions of selected chapters (listed below) will be covered in this short course.
PLANNING This session will discuss how to define the organizations vision, mission and scope, values, institutional goals, objectives, strategies, and programs and activities through strategic planning and action planning. (Chapters 2 and 5)
ORGANIZING This session will discuss how to implement policy, establish procedures, and set schedules and budgets through effective decision making and problem solving in the context of designing good programs. (Chapters 3 and 10)
INFLUENCING This session will discuss how to exercise leadership, responsibility and authority through teamwork, delegation and conflict management, and how to influence others through motivation and persuasive communication and public relations. (Chapters 1 and 8)
CONTROLLING This session will discuss how to establish quality standards, and manage quality, efficiency and productivity through control and evaluation. (Chapters 4 and 13)
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT This session will be taught by a guest instructor and will cover fundamentals of financial management and applicable governmental regulations relevant to non-profit organizations. (Chapters 7 and 11)
